Richard J. Collodi, 75, of Butler died Thursday at the Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born in Butler, Sept. 8, 1930, he was the son of Harold and Iole Bartoli Collodi.

He was a 1948 graduate of Butler High School and graduated from Penn State University in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in health and physical education. He received a master's degree in education from Duquesne University with a major in secondary administration. He also received his guidance certificate from Slippery Rock College.

Mr. Collodi had taught health and physical education, served as a guidance counselor and as a principal and track coach at Moniteau High School.

He then went to the Butler School District, where he taught physical education at several elementary schools, served as assistant principal at the Butler Junior and Intermediate high schools and was a varsity track and cross country coach. In 1989, he retired as principal of the Butler Intermediate High School.

He was a member of St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church. He also belonged to the Butler County, Pennsylvania State and National Secondary School Principals associations. He was a life member of the Butler Elks Lodge.

During the Korean War, he was an Army military policeman.

He was inducted into the Butler Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1990 and was on the Hall of Fame Board of Directors. One of his greatest pleasures was coaching high school student athletes.

Surviving are his wife, to whom he was married for 46 years; a daughter; and a granddaughter.

COLLODI -- A Mass of Christian burial for Richard J. Collodi, who died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, was celebrated Saturday morning at St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. James Salberg officiating. Burial was at St. Michael Cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by the Martin Funeral Home.
