Calvin was born in Matthews, Indiana, the son of Russell and Mabel (Sutton) Smiley on May 25, 1925.
Calvin served in the U.S. Navy as a young man.
He married the former Roberta K. Kane on April 29, 1946 in Charleston, South Carolina. She preceded him in death on January 4, 2004.
In 1966 Calvin and his family moved to Battle Creek. He was previously employed as a general foreman at Pratt and Whitney. Calvin then was employed at General Motors as an electrician, retiring after 30 years of service. After retirement Calvin became a truck driver which he enjoyed doing for five years. Calvin loved his family and very dear to him were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an outdoorsman, enjoying camping and fishing. He also enjoyed karaoke singing, watching football and the Indianapolis 500 with his grandson.
Calvin is survived by his daughters Linda (Michael) Morcombe of Battle Creek and Sharon (Robert) Howard of Marshall; grandchildren, Vincent (Kelly) Morcombe, Vanessa Morcombe, Sabrina (Paul) Rose, Emily (Tim) Parker, Benjamin McCann and Kristy and Louie Howard. He also leaves ten great-grandchildren and his sister Bernice Mitchener of Indiana.
Private family services will be held. Interment will be in Elwood, Indiana. Arrangements are by Royal Funeral Home.
