GREENVILLE – Carroll Jerry Smith, 56, passed away peacefully Sept. 14, 2007, with his loving wife by his side after a courageous, year-long battle with cancer, at C.A. Dean Memorial Hospital, Greenville. He was born Dec. 25, 1950, in Greenville, the son of Gerald and Alberta (Rodrigue) Smith. Carroll was a 1969 graduate of Greenville High School. He attended Husson College for three semesters before transferring to the University of Maine – Machias, where he played basketball and baseball. While there, he met his wife of 35 years and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business education. He taught and coached at Washington Academy, East Machias, for four years before returning to Greenville in 1977. He served the students of Greenville schools for 20 years. During his tenure he taught business, coached many athletic teams, including the 1978 Class D State Championship Girls Basketball Team, served 11 years as the assistant principal and four of those years as athletic director. He then spent two years at Penobscot Valley High School, Howland; one year as the assistant principal and one year in a combined assistant principal/athletic director position, before retiring from education in 1999. He served the citizens of Greenville as a member of Greenville Board of Selectmen, where he was recently elected to his second term. Carroll was a sports enthusiast; he enjoyed the annual baseball trips with his good friends, Rollie Wortman and Richie Nadeau. He was a devoted St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants and Bob Knight fan. He enjoyed playing cards, whether at the Smith Camp, poker with the guys, rummy with his family or Texas Hold ‘Em. He thoroughly enjoyed bird hunting and ice-fishing. He enjoyed many great times with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Fonda Smith of Greenville; son, Eric Smith and his wife, Jill and their children, Krystal and Kevin Levesque, all of Howland; daughter, Maria Smith of Greenville; brother, Vernon H. Smith and his wife, Nancy, of Las Vegas; brother-in-law, Ceylon E. Putnam III and his wife, Linda; brother-in-law, Dana C. Putnam and his wife Natalie, all of Peru, Maine; two special uncles, Lawrence K. Roderick and his wife, Barbara, of Greenville, and Adrian J. Morin and his wife, Patricia of, Dover-Foxcroft; as well as several other aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many exceptionally great friends. He was predeceased by his grandparents, parents; son, Jerry R. Smith; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Green-ville, with the Rev. Richard Malo officiating. Graveside services will be conducted after the Mass in the family lot at Greenville Cemetery with a reception after in the hall of Holy Family Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made in memory of Carroll to the Carroll J. Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 744, Greenville, ME 04441.
