Arlene V. Ruland, 80, of Tomah died Friday, December 4, 1998 at Tomah Memorial Hospital. She was born on October 3, 1918 to Albert and Charlotte (Viney) Gage in the town of Oakdale. She was united in marriage to Francis Ruland on May 21, 1941 at Saint James Catholic Church, Camp Douglas. Arlene taught at the Diamond Valley, Paradise, Watermill, Benjaminville, Greenfield, Oakdale, and Tomah schools. She retired from teaching in 1983 after 38 years. She was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association, an active member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church and a past president of the P.C.C.W. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Francis; two sons: Francis, Jr. (Jean) of Warrens, Alois (Cheri) of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; three daughters: Karen (Jerry, Sr.) Holmes of DeForest, Wisconsin, Rita (Robert) Uchytil of Madison, Wisconsin, Rose Marie (Hans) Gulick of King George, Virginia; 13 grandchildren: Jacqueline (David) Weekley, Jerry, Jr. (Velvet) Holmes, Bryon Holmes, Joanne (Sott) Rutherford, Tonya (Tim) Schroeder, Nathan Ruland, William Steele, Aaron Ruland, Michael Steele, Kathy Garland, Beth Ruland, Kirsten and Johannes Gulik; two great-grandchildren, Patric and Peter Shroeder; one sister, Patricia (Lawrence) Dechant, of Camp Douglas, Wisconsin. Arlene is further survived by other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Diane Steele; an infant daughter, Kitty Ann; and a sister, Bernice Jilek.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 9, 1998, 11:00 a.m. at Saint Marys Catholic Church, Tomah. Reverend Daniel E. Kozlowski will officiate. Burial will be in Saint Marys Catholic Cemetery at Tomah. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 East Monowau, Tomah on Tuesday, December 8, 1998 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. A Parish rosary will be recited by the Parish Council of Catholic Women at 4:30 p.m. and a Bible Vigil at 6:0 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
