1st Sergt. Philip E. Hannum, a farmer from Concord, Pennsylvania enlisted at age 21 on Sept. 6, 1861, for 3 years as a private in Company D, 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He reenlisted as a veteran at Fernandina, Florida on March 15, 1864, to date December 3, 1863 and was wounded in the right arm during the action at Foster's Place, Bermuda Hundred , Virginia on May 18, 1864.

He was promoted to corp. Sept. 6, 1864 and to sergt. Dec. 5, 1864. he was again wounded in action at Fort Fisher, N. C, on Jan. 15, 1865 while serving as the Color Bearer, and was promoted to 1st sergt. Feb. 15, 1865.

He mustered out with his Company at Weldon, North Carolina on Aug. 28, 1865. ["Served continuously with co. in all engagements; was gallant and brave." Capt. M ]
