Eldest of four daughters of George Blumer, Dean of the Yale School of Medicine (1910-1920), and Mabel Louise Bradley Blumer.

Her maternal grandmother Mary Elizabeth Kimberly was a paternal granddaughter of Captain Silas Kimberly, who served in the Connecticut Militia during the Revolutionary War. Her maternal grandmother was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She met her husband in 1926, and they were engaged in 1931. They were married in New Haven, Connecticut. Her husband was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, in 1939.

Her sister Elsie also married a physicist, Edwin M. McMillan, who went on to be awarded a Nobel Prize, the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, shared with Glenn Seaborg.

Her husband was the Director of the Berkeley Radiation Laboratory, re-named Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory after his death. After the death of her husband, her brother-in-law Edwin M. McMillan became the laboratory director, serving from 1958 until his retirement in 1973.
