Harvey S. Chriswell

Mr. Harvey S. Chriswell of Greenwood passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, at Golden Age Nursing Home in Greenwood. Mr. Chriswell was born in Poplar Creek, Mississippi, on November 29, 1928, to A C and Bessie Boyd Chriswell. He was 90 years old.

A visitation will be held at North Greenwood Baptist Church, located at 615 Grand Boulevard in Greenwood, on Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Jim Phillips will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Winona, with military honors rendered by American Legion Post #29. Pallbearers will be Walter Swider, Keith Mims, David Lott, David Brown, David Danehower, and Tommie Ellett.

Mr. Chriswell entered the U.S. Air Force on October 28, 1946, and served for 20 years and 3 days, retiring on October 31, 1966. During this time, he served in Japan, Korea, Germany, Turkey, and back to Germany. His last stateside assignment was at Pease AFB, New Hampshire, where he retired with the rank of Tech Sergeant. Nearly all of his assignments were with the Strategic Air Command, and he also spent time in the 2nd Air Force, 5th Air Force, and 15th Air Force, with his last assignment being with the 509th Bomb Wing. At his retirement, he was given a lifetime honorary membership in the 509th Bomb Wing. Mr. Chriswell was also a Master Mason for 47 years and an avid fisherman. He and his wife, Mary Alice, spent nine years traveling 48 states in an RV. He loved the outdoors and often pulled a boat behind the RV to places like Florida, Louisiana, and Arkansas, to fish. He and Mary Alice also camped at several lakes in Mississippi to fish.

Mr. Chriswell is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Chriswell, of Greenwood; his son, Stephen W. Chriswell of Yazoo City; stepson, Kenneth B. Chrismond (Lisa) of Punta Gorda, Florida; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jerry H. Chriswell of Leesville, Louisiana; and his sister, Marie Chriswell Little of Horn Lake.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or a charity of the donor's choice.
