Conley H. Ahart, age 91, of Hopedale, Illinois, a native of Trigg County, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2019, at Hopedale Nursing Home. He was born March 26, 1928, in Golden Pond, Kentucky, to the late William McKinley and Myrtle Bratton Ahart.

A veteran of WWII, he was inducted into the U.S. Army in May 1946. He was trained as a paratrooper at Fort Bliss, Texas, and was then assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After his discharge, he married the love of his life, Dixie, in 1947, and they made their home in Peoria, Illinois, where Conley worked for Caterpillar Tractor until 1950 when he was called to serve with the 403rd Engineers Reserve. He was discharged in 1952 and returned with his wife and daughter to Trigg County, where he attended Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, and worked as a meat cutter at the former Master Market east of Cadiz. In 1955, they returned to Illinois, where Conley opened Sunnyland Meat Market in Washington and worked there until his retirement in 1985. He and his family enjoyed camping and sightseeing, having visited 47 states during their travels.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Rev. John Ahart, Maylon Ahart, and Hubert Ahart; and four sisters, Edna Vinson, Bessie Womack, Dorothy Fennell, and Mavalene Ahart.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Dixie Stallons Ahart, of Hopedale; his daughter, Linda (Gary) Chase, of Bedford, Texas; a grandson, Gary David (Becky) Chase; and a granddaughter, Diana Christine (Daryn) Clyburn.

Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home, Inc., 138 Main Street in Cadiz, where the family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 a.m. until the funeral service time of 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, September 19, 2019, with Rev. Richard Sexton officiating. Entombment will follow in East End Cemetery in Cadiz.
