Ira was born May 5 1818 in Cinicinnati, Ohio. He married his first wife Mary Ann Lawrence March 2 1849 in Dubuque, Iowa. They had nine children, Edward, Permilia, Florence, William, Allen, Henry, Orrin, Ann, and an Infant. Five that lived to adulthood. His wife Mary died 1870 of childbirth with their ninth child. In 1871 he married the children's nanny Annie Frost. He and Annie then had one child, Lillie, who died at the age of 3. Ira was a farmer just out side of Dubuque, Iowa also a stone mason.
