Obituary for Robert Frank Babcock
Robert Frank Babcock
Robert Frank Babcock, 91, of Hickory Corners, formally Dowling, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 8, 2019. He was born on June 11, 1928, the son of Harry and Florence (Cairns) Babcock, at the Family Farm. He attended Barney Mill One-Room School and Hastings Public School where he graduated in 1944 at age of 16. He worked the farm for many years. On September 24, 1949, he married Viola Louise Sigourney. In the early ’60’s they moved into the farmhouse after his parents built their little retirement home “down the path”. This marriage ended in divorce. They had 6 children. He worked at E.W. Bliss Co. in Hastings for a couple of years. After he stopped farming he went to work as a greens keeper/mechanic at Marywood Country Club and eventually retired from Riverside Country Club after many years and was referred to as “Onion Bob”. He enjoyed attending music venues, jam sessions to listen to his many friends, playing his concertinas and pushbutton accordions, traveling the backroads, visiting Shipshewana, going to antique tractor shows and garage sales, and tending his vegetable garden that he shared with many.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Casler) Babcock; children, Christine (Stewart) Ayres, Elaine (Dale) Miller, Abigail Perez, Jennifer Johnson, Kenneth Babcock and Frank (Emily) Babcock; step-children, Kathy, Barbara, Diane and Tim; 14 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 16 step-grandchildren; 2 step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Marion; sister, Harriett; baby granddaughters, Rachel Babcock and Sarah Miller.
Visitation will be held at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service Friday from 12:30-1:30 PM with the funeral service to immediately follow at 1:30 PM. A private family burial will take place at Union Cemetery in Maple Grove Township, Michigan.
