Buford (Buff) Sachtler (nee Bobbitt) left her earthly life on August 29, 2019 at the age of 91. She was the beloved wife of the late Ekkehart Sachtler. The two met as employees of Radio Free Europe in Munich, Germany, where they married in 1952.
Buff was born and raised in Charlotte, N.C. . She was the daughter of William H. Bobbitt, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina-Retired and Mrs. Sarah Dunlap Bobbitt. Buff is survived by her children: Kirk Sachtler and Kay Toke, her sisters: Sarah Carter and Harriet Moss; four remarkable grandchildren and many, many accomplished nieces, nephews, and relatives.
Buff spent her life in service to her fellow man, giving freely of her time and talents.
After studying English and Education at Queens College, she held teaching positions in Virginia and New York. After moving to NJ in 1962, Buff taught in Nursery school programs at both the West Side Presbyterian Church and the YWCA both in Ridgewood. While working full-time and raising a family, Buff also completed a masters program in Education at night.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Buff was instrumental in developing and directing the first Child Care Center of the YWCA of Ridgewood, empowering women to return to the workforce. She went on to develop an After School program, where children were brought from area schools to the YWCA for enrichment activities while their parents worked.
Buff served on the Executive Board of the Salvation Army for many years. Also, she served in the Bergen County Office of Children, creating and instituting services for underprivileged children.
Buff was a long time member and active participant at the West Side Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood. She served the church in many ways and loved to be involved in study and support groups.
She was an active member of the Saddle River / Ridgewood Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Buff served as Chapter Regent, Chaplain, and represented her chapter at numerous Continental Congresses in Washington D.C. .
Buff was a voracious reader and was actively involved in book groups for most of her life. She also enjoyed attending musical performances, theater and opera, in addition to traveling and going dancing with her husband.
Family and friends were welcomed at West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood, on Saturday, November 9th at 11 am for a Memorial Service to celebrate Buff’s life.
In lieu of flowers donations in her memory to the West Side Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood and/or The (DAR) Daughters of the American Revolution Saddle River /Ridgewood New Jersey Chapter
