William was an early settler of Morgan County, Illinois when he moved with his parents from Virginia in 1822 and became a surveyor and engineer. He later ran the Sherman House Hotel in Beardstown, Illinois. In the 1870's they all became pioneer settlers of the southeastern Kansas Territory.

He was a School Teacher, Farmer, Surveyor and in the Livery Business

In the 1880 Census (just 2 years before his death) he was Farming in Browns Grove, Pawnee Co, KS.
