Aberdeen Press and Journal - Monday 23 March 1908, p 4:

MR JAMES AITKEN, BRAEMAR.
James Aitken, till about two years ago the agent of the Union Bank in Braemar, died there on Saturday morning. Mr Aitken, who was over 70 years of age, was born in Braemar, and from humble beginnings became one its leading inhabitants, interested all that concerned the welfare of the place. In his early days he was a and saddler, and after he had started a local savings bank was selected, in the early seventies as the first agent of the Union Bank when branch was established in Braemar. Mr Aitken was a man of great amiability, tact, and energy and under his supervision the bank prospered there. He took a very keen interest in meteorology, and between 40 and 50 years ago took charge of set of meteorological instruments presented to Braemar by the late Prince Consort. These instruments, under Mr Aitken's care, were used to the greatest advantage, for twice a day during those many years he had the meteorological readings taken and kept in the most praiseworthy manner. In the public affairs of Braemar he took a leading part. He was a member of the District Committee of the County Council, School Board, and Parish Council. He was also an elder in the United Free Church, and had a reputation being one of the keenest "sermon tasters" in the district, taking the opportunity, at various times, of visiting almost every church in Aberdeen. Mr Aitken had several recognitions Royal favour connection with his work in Braemar, one of the latest being a handsome gold scarf pin with the King's monogram in diamonds and rubies, presented by His Majesty. Mr Aitken, who was an excellent example of a self-made man, is survived by his widow. There was family. His striking personality will greatly missed by and visitors who were in the habit of going to Braemar.
