Herbert Alderman, who went by Monte, spent the last decades of his life in Paradise at his home on Deanna Way.

When the Camp Fire overtook his home, Alderman was 79.

He was a mechanic in his younger days, recalled his neighbor, Ron Evans. Alderman lived alone and kept mostly to himself, but he would sometimes join his neighbors for family functions.

"He was a really good friend to my grandmother," Evans said.

As he grew older, Alderman developed some medical conditions that made it hard for him to move around. He used a walker. A devoted group of caregivers increasingly doted upon him. Among them was Laurie Teague, his step-daughter.

"Myself and my siblings have been through a very rough almost year waiting so very long even to get the official death certificate," she said in a brief phone interview. "It's been heart-wrenching."
