As a youth just out of Cambridge, he worked as an actor in the London Vaudeville Theatre, before coming to New York City in the late 1880s. He appeared in 19 films between 1916 to 1933 and was best remembered for his role as Baron Frankenstein in the original classic horror film "Frankenstein" (1931). His other film credits include "The Lifeguardsman" (1916), "Victory and Peace" (1918), "Raffles" (1930), "Waterloo Bridge" (1931) and "Lord of the Manor" (1933). He died of the consequences of an earlier heart attack in London, England, at age 74.
