Lucy Brandon Parlange, one of Pointe Coupee's great personalities and hostesses, died peacefully at home on October 6, 2018.She was predeceased in death by her husband of 59 years, Walter Charles Parlange, Jr. , who died on May 1, 2010, her parents, Henry Wall Brandon and Dorothy Quincy Maltby Brandon and a sister, Mary Winifred Brandon Burke. Survivors include her three children Walter Charles Parlange III and wife, Gwin, Brandon Gerard Parlange, Angèle Maltby Parlange and a granddaughter, Carolyn Parlange. She was born in Nashville, Tn. on January 3, 1928 and spent her early years on her family's plantation, Arcole, in Pinckneyville, Ms. Her mother, a teacher, home schooled her sister and her until she was 9 years old when they moved to New Orleans. Each day after finishing their lessons, they would ride horseback to their cousins at Desert Plantation and have lunch. These were some of her most memorable days and she visited Arcole often after moving to New Orleans. She attended Lusher Grammar School, Sophie B. Wright High School and studied art at Sophie B. Newcomb College and Louisiana State University where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity. She returned to New Orleans and was a cartographic draftsman for the Corps of Engineers until her marriage in 1951 at Grace Episcopal Church in St. Francisville and then moved with her husband to Parlange Plantation. Initially, she missed New Orleans and her parents, but she grew to love the country life and imported her friends to visit her there. She joined her mother in law, in receiving tourists and friends at Parlange, and was known for her hospitality often inviting the tourists she especially liked to stay for lunch, supper and often to spend the night. So much so, that her husband titled the house "Constant Company." "Come back soon and come back often" was one of her signature farewells. She was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, East Side West Side, Pointe Coupee Parish Book Club, Le Petit Salon, St. Paul's Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Morganza along with several historical organizations. Affectionately called "Miss Lucy," she was a consummate entertainer and had everyone from the Duchess of Devonshire to Martha Stewart to her all time favorite guests, "The Parlange Playmates." Once her children were grown, she organized a group of local children after school called "The Parlange Playmates" and took them on field trips, put on plays for nursing homes, read to them and let them play with the old fashioned toys at Parlange. She thought nothing of climbing up the oak tree, pushing children on the rope swing or hopping on a Harley Davidson motorcycle with a group of riders who were making a plantation pilgrimage. Many times she piled as many as 14 children, including her own, in her Mustang on several of her "rambles around the river" long before seat belts were required. But even then, the word was, "if they're with Miss Lucy, you know they're in good hands." Deeply spiritual, her magnanimous way always uplifted people, whether promoting their businesses or finding a special quality in them which endeared many friends from all walks of life to her. The family is grateful to her devoted and attentive doctors and caretakers who brought comfort to both Mrs. Parlange and her family throughout the final years. The family wishes to also express their deep appreciation to Hospice of Baton Rouge. Visitation will be at Grace Episcopal Church in St. Francisville, La. beginning at 10am on Thursday October 11, 2018 until services at 11am.
