Paul J. Piccard Paul J. Piccard, 82, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. EST Saturday at Holy Comforter Church. Bevis Funeral Home of Tallahassee (850-385-2193) is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308, or the Paul Piccard Professorship, Florida State University, FSU Foundation, Tallahassee, FL. Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, he came to the United States at age 2. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served in the 386th Infantry in Germany and Japan. In 1945 he returned to the University of Minnesota, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1946 and a Master of Arts in 1948. He married Betty Koalska in 1947, and in 1948 they went to Texas, where he earned a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Texas. They moved to Tallahassee in 1953, where he had a one-year appointment at Florida State University. Forty years later in 1993, he retired from FSU as a professor of political science. During his tenure on the faculty, he served as the director of the Honors Program and president of the University Senate and was a mentor to hundreds of undergraduate students. He was a proud and loving father of five children, Bob Piccard of Vermont, Jane Piccard (and husband Hunt Greene) of Minneapolis, John Piccard (and wife Geraldine) of Tennessee, Mary Vance (and husband James) of Tallahassee and Ann Piccard (and husband Charles Reischmann) of St. Petersburg. Other survivors include two brothers, John Piccard of Pennsylvania and Donald Piccard of Minneapolis; six grandchildren, Dylan, Chris, Brennan, Liz, Mary and Paul; and two great-grandchildren, Alex and Zadie.
