Resided in O'Fallon, Illinois at the time of enlistment; mustered into Company I, 117th Infantry (Illinois), Union on September 19, 1862 as a Private; mustered out on August 5, 1865 at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois.
The following additional information was furnished by a distant relative 6 Mar 2010: "The tombstone reads Lafayette Bridges, however, his full name was William Lafayette Bridges, b. circa 1843 in O'Fallon, bapt. 26 Dec 1858 at Oak Hill Baptist Church, d. 17 Jan 1873. He married Eliza A. Elliot 12 Sep 1867 in O'Fallon twp., St. Clair, IL; marriage performed by Rev. John H. Swift. He had one surviving daughter, Livonia Bridges. His widowed wife married James H. Baker and moved to Carlyle with daughter and husband."
