Carol J. Bates, 89, of Hobe Sound passed away Saturday, April 25, 2015 at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL. Born January 5, 1926 in Cleveland, OH, she has resided in Hobe Sound for over 20 years, coming from Erie, PA. Prior to her long time loving career as wife, mother and homemaker, Carol worked for Cleveland Cliffs Iron.
She was a member of the Lutheran faith. Carol was a musician and played the French horn, bass, and piano. She was a former member of the Cleveland Women’s Symphony Orchestra. She also sang and tap danced. Carol was a member of Circle of Friends, this organization knitted scarves and hats for veterans, babies and cancer patients. She was also accomplished in needle work. Carol was an active member of Lost Lake Community. She played Mahjong, was in the bridge club, and was a former author of the newsletter.
Survivors include her loving husband of 69 years, Howard C. Bates; daughters, Candace Jaruszewicz of Charleston, SC; Deborah Habink of Knoxville, TN and Susan Bates (Stephen Spitzer) of Stow, MA; five grandchildren, James Jaruszewicz; Michael Jaruszewicz; Thayer Smith (Simon); Leslie Cooksey and Erin Rote; two great grandchildren, Oliver Smith and Wyatt Jaruszewicz; nieces; nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Tubbesing.
