The son of Bernard and Clara Allen, Leo enlisted in the A.I.F. at Paddington, New South Wales on 7 March 1941. A member of 2/20 Battalion he was transferred to 2/26 Battalion prior to capitulation.

Leo was selected as part of "B" Force,becoming Japanese P.O.W. Number 384.

He died of Malaria at Sandakan No. 1 Camp and was buried in Sandakan No. 1 Cemetery.

He is remembered on the Labuan Memorial as well as at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Australia and the Ex P.O.W. Memorial Wall at Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.
