The son of David and Christina Bancroft and husband of Irene, Errol enlisted in the A.I.F. at Kelvin Grove,Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

He was a member of 2/26 Battalion when he was selected a part of "B" Force. On arrival at Sandakan he became Japanese P.O.W. Number 148.

He died at Sandakan No 2 Camp from Malaria and was buried at Sandakan No 3 Cemetery.

In Australia he is commemorated at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra & The Ex POW Memorial Wall at Ballarat, Victoria
