The son of Andrew and Annie Barber, Gordon enlisted in the A.I.F. at Kelvin Grove, Brisbane on 27 July 1940.

Assigned to 2/26 Battalion he became a cook at Battalion Head Quarters.

After capitulation as part of "B" Force, he was sent to Sandakan, where he became Japanese P.O.W. No.456. He died at Sandakan No. 1 Camp from Malarial Meningitis after being placed in the punishment cage.

He is remembered on Labuan Memorial; at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and the Memorial POW Wall in Ballarat, Victoria.
