He was brutally murdered in Greece in 1948 during his coverage of the Greek Civil War and the investigations that followed his death became the basis of the 1992 New York Times bestselling book "The Polk Conspiracy" by Kati Marton (ISBN: 978-0812920475). His killer(s) have never been brought to justice.

In 2008, the United States Postal Service released a 42¢ postage stamp commemorating Polk's contribution and legacy to investigative journalism.A Memorial to him is placed in the Greenwood Cemetery in Fort Worth Texas.
