New London, NH - James Sherman Barker, Sr., 91, of Main Street, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at the New London Hospital. He was born in Boston, MA on June 9, 1911 the son of Williston W. and Gertrude (Sherman) Barker. He graduated from Roxbury Latin School in 1928, Harvard College in 1932, and Harvard Business School in 1934. Mr. Barker worked at the Indian Head National Bank in Nashua starting in 1935. He was President of Mechanicks National Bank and then merged to Bank of NH. He retired from Indian Head National Bank in Concord, NH where he was also Chairman of the Board and served from 1973-1982. He had resided in Concord from 1952-1978 when he moved to New London. Mr. Barker spent many winters in Naples, FL. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New London. He had been a member of the Board of Directors of New England Telephone Company, the Board of Concord Group Insurance Co., a Director of the Concord YMCA, First President of NH Charitable Fund, Founding President of the NH Higher Education Assistance Foundation, a Director of the Swenson Granite Company, served on the Vestry and Treasurer of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Nashua, Treasurer of the Diocese of NH from 1955-1974, was a 33rd Degree Mason and a member of the Bektash Temple in Concord, a Director and former President of Family Services in Concord, served on the Vestry for many years at St. Paul's Church in Concord, was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of St. Mary's in the Mountains School, was on the Board at the Concord Hospital, was a member and past Chairman of the Parent's Committee at St. Paul's School, was a member and past President of the NH Bankers Association, was a member of the Concord Rotary Club, and was active in the Harvard Club of NH. He was married to Barbara (Willard) Barker in 1940 in Nashua and she died in 1993. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Robinson Franklin Barker and George Leverett Barker. Members of his family surviving include a daughter, Alison W. Barker of Concord, NH; two sons, J. Sherman Barker, Jr. of Lakeville, CT and Stephen K. Barker of Salisbury, MD; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Cynthia Cormack of Tryon, NC; nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Sat., May 3, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Gould Road, New London, NH. Burial will follow in the Kelsey Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the New London Hospital, 270 County Road or St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 294, both New London, NH 03257.
