John A. Sarber was the son of Christian and Anna Sarber. As a young man he moved to Lockborune, Franklin County, where he served an apprenticeship with a bride builder. Later he opened a general store and was appointed postmaster under President Buchanan administration. He later moved to Columbus, he was served as treasurer of the Democratic state executive committee for several years. Elected justice of the peace in 1874 and served until 1877, later he assisted in running the United States and American hotels in Columbus. He was an active member of the Jackson club, a 32-degree mason, a firm believer in SPIRITUALISM, and served a term on the city council for the old 4th ward. He married Amanda Kinsell December 1, 1882. He was a member of the First Universalist church. He died of "Heart Failure" and was interred September 19th, 1895 on his lot in Green Lawn. The undertaker was "Taylor & O'Harra". His interment number is 22586.
Mrs. R.S. Lillie, the well-known Boston Spiritualist delivered his eulogy. Sarber was one of the most prominent spiritualists in the city. His pallbearers were Wesley O'Hare, Dr. P.E. Blesch, Captain Engelke, Jacob Reeb, J.J. Beard and Jonathan Dent.
