Jan was born near McGregor, MN on January 30, 1924 to Cecile and James McArdle. She was the third eldest of 6 children. By all accounts, she lived a difficult childhood as her mother died in childbirth when Jan was 9. Being the eldest girl, she assumed many of the responsibilities of her mother as she cared for her siblings. Perhaps this was good training for her days of raising her own children. As a young adult, she spent some time in college at Little Falls and Hibbing, and then in Bremerton, Washington before returning to Minnesota. Jan met Warren Eckes after WWll and soon they were engaged to be married. On April 12, 1947, they were married in Minneapolis and started a family shortly thereafter that grew over the next 10 years to include 5 children. During this time, Jan and Warren moved their household to Washington D.C., Detroit, MI and then back home to Minneapolis.

Jan passed away on September 20, 2019 at the age of 95. She lived a full and long life and died of natural causes. At her passing Jan was preceded in death by her husband Warren and had been broken hearted since his passing.
