Capt. Daniel Tranchemontagne, U.S. Army Reserves, was called to active duty in November 2002 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and served in Kuwait as a staff officer with the 368th Engineers until he was diagnosed with cancer in January 2004. He died at Walter Reed Medical Center.

He was born on Dec. 26, 1971, in Pascagoula, Miss., the son of George and Jacqueline (Roy) Tranchemontagne.

He graduated from Sanford High School in 1989, attended the University of Southern Maine in Gorham where he was in the Reserve Officer Training Corps, and later transferred to Norwich University, the military college of Vermont, where he was a member of the artillery battery. He graduated in
1993 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the Army Reserve.

He served as a platoon leader and later commanded A Company of the 368th Engineering Battalion in Vermont and New Hampshire. In 1996, he returned to USM and earned a certification in teaching and a master's degree in education. For the past six years he taught mathematics at Scarborough High School and was an assistant wrestling coach at USM. He started the wrestling program at Scarborough High School. He enjoyed scuba diving, distance running and dancing.

Survivors include his parents of Sanford; his fiancée, Holly Politis of Portland; his maternal grandparents, Edgar and Anita Roy of Sanford; and five brothers, Lt. Cmdr. Marc Tranchemontagne, USN of Alexandria, Va., David Tranchemontagne of Saco, Denis Tranchemontagne of Bedford, N.H., James Tranchemontagne of Portland and Andre Tranchemontagne of Sanford; and a niece and nephew.

The funeral Mass was celebrated at Holy Family Church in Sanford.

Burial with military honors followed in St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Daniel J. Tranchemontagne Scholarship Fund, in care of York County Federal Credit
Union, 870 Main St., Sanford, 04073. The fund will award an annual scholarship to a Scarborough High School wrestler.

Arrangements were under the direction of the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home in Sanford.
