Thomas Alberg was born as Nils Adrian Alberg, according to a hand writen entry by his mother in his baby book. For many years, he went by Adrian, using the letter "N" as his middle initial. It may have been because his grandfather was still alive, or simply, as he told me, he didn't like the name. His sister June told me that his mother called him "Ad", pronounced "Aid", even after he changed his name legally to Thomas Adrian Nils Alberg.

When I asked him, he couldn't remember the exact year he changed it. He was still going by Adrian in 1939 when he married, but his diploma from the University of WA in 1942 gives his name as Thomas. He said he picked "Tom" as his name both to honor his favorite uncle, Thomas Dahlqist, and because he thought it was a strong name.
