It was with deep regret that the citizens of Springfield learned that Hon. O. M. Hatch had passed to his long home yesterday at his residence. Owing to his prominence in former political circles, his career as a state official and his integrity as a man, his life is worthy of a more than passing notion.
Mr. Hatch's death was not unexpected by his immediate friends and relatives, but the news was received by his less intimate acquaintances with evident suprise and pain. He had been in feeble health for the past seven or eight years and since the beginning of the present year, had failed rapidly. He passed away peacefully and quietly yesterday morning with the family gathered around his bedside.
Ozias M. Hatch was born in Hillsborough, Hillsborough county, N. H., April 14, 1814. His father, Dr. Reuben Hatch, removed to Pike county in this state in 1835 and Ozias followed him the following year.
Seven years Clerk of the Circuit Court of Pike County, 1840-1847.
General mercantile business in Griggsville, IL, from 1847-1851.
One term in State Legislature in 1851.
Two-term Secretary of State under Governor Bissell and then under Governor Yates.
One of the original members of the National Lincoln Monument Assocaation.
Married in 1860 to Miss Julia R. Enos, daughter of Pascal P. Enos. She and three children survived him, Pascal E., Ozias M., jr., and Frank L. ; brother Isaac Hatch, sister Mrs. Lucy Cree.
