DOMINIC L. PENALE, SR.

Dominic L. Penale, Sr., was born January 27, 1923, in Niagara Falls, NY, to the late Ralph and Francesca (Gallo) Penale. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.

Dominic attended Center Avenue School and North Junior High. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School where he excelled in football and also served as captain of the basketball team. Dominic went on to play semi-professional football for the Niagara Falls Cataracts. He enlisted into the United States Marines Corp during World War II, and served in the Asiatic-Pacific area. He participated in action in the Western New Guinea and the Battle of Guam until his honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant in 1945.

Following his discharge, Mr. Penale returned to Niagara Falls and married his loving wife, Angeline C. (Ruggiero) Penale, on June 7, 1947 at St. Joseph Church. Mrs. Penale predeceased him on August 5, 2017.

Mr. Penale worked at Hooker Chemical Corp (Occidental Chemical Company) for 35 years and retired on July 1, 1982. He served as a supervisor of the storage department and was secretary of the employee union. Mr. Penale owned and operated Dom Penale Grocery and Meat Market located at 2512 Pine Avenue. He also worked in the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department as a budget officer from 1986 to 1990.

Mr. Penale was a representative of the Niagara County Legislature (City of Niagara Falls, 4th District) for 16 years. He served on the finance committee for 13 years and was chairman for six straight years. He was also a majority leader for the Democratic Party, Vice-Chairman of the Industrial Development Agency and was elected chairman to finish the term of Paul Joy who retired.

Dominic was a devout Catholic and longtime member of Holy Family Parish at St. Joseph Church where he was past president of the St. Joseph Holy Name, St. Joseph Usher Club and the Parish Senior Society. He was also a longtime member of the Niagara Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Knights of Columbus #247.

Mr. Penale was one of the original founders of the Midtown Little League in 1959, and was manager of Home Oil Major and senior teams. He held post of Vice President and was a permanent member of the Board of Directors.

In recognition and appreciation for Mr. Penale’s service to the community throughout the years, he received the Niagara Community Action Program Inc. and was awarded as the “Top Man of the Week Award” by Top’s Markets and WHLD.

Mr. Penale is survived by his children, Dominic Penale, Jr. and Thomas (Kathy) Penale; his grandchildren, Mary Alice (Brian) O’Donnell, Margaret Rose (Chris) Zagotti, Thomas (Molly) Penale, Jr., Stephen (Ally) Penale and David (Lindsay) Penale; eight great-grandchildren, Liam and Fiona O’Donnell, Enzo Zagotti, and Mya, Lou, Nicholas, Vinny and Geno Dominic Penale; his sister, Frances (Miles) Havens, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by an infant son, John Penale; his sisters, Theresa (late Anthony) DiCecco, Josephine (late Armand) Laurenzi, Jenne (late John) Whitmire, Regetta (late Fred) Bane, Mary Penale; and brothers, Anthony Penale, Laurence (Mary) Penale, Frank (Jennie) Penale and Eric Penale.

Visitation will be on Sunday, October 20th from 3 – 7 P.M. at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY, where funeral services will begin on Monday at 9:15 A.M., followed by Mr. Penale’s Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. in Holy Family Parish at St. Joseph Church, 1413 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY.

Entombment with Military Honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Memorial offerings may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
