Maruia Danielsson was the much loved daughter of Bengt and Marie-Therese Danielsson. Her father participated in the Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947 and her parents then married in Lima, Peru in 1948. Maruia was born in 1952 on Raroia Island in Melanesian group, the atoll on which the Kon-Tiki raft made landfall after its Expedition in 1947. The name Maruia means "the gentle" in Polynesian and is the name of a peacemaker legendary female chieftain. The family grew further when they adopted the teenage girl Marei. She had been with and welcomed the Kon-Tikifararna to her island and became a loving big sister to Maruia.

Sadly Maruia's young life was cut short when she died from cancer in 1972. Her parents were convinced that their daughter's death at the age of 20 could be blamed on France's test blasts in the area of their home. A consolation in Bengt and Marie-Therese's grief became Marei's son Robert as they adopted him. According to Polynesian custom, Marei had actually donated the boy to the Danielssons's to love and raise. Maruia Danielsson was buried in Ostra Tollstad church in Ostergotland, Sweden. Her mother and father rest by her side.
