Tuskee Airmen, a 21-year veteran of the Air Force who in recent years served as a nonteaching assistant at Cheltenham High School and who was also active in elections in the the township. When Tom joined the service in 1947, it was still the Army Air Corps and was racially segregated. In 1949, President Harry Truman ordered the military services integrated and the U.S. Air Force was created. Tom served in the elite 332nd Fighter Group, known as the Tuskegee Airmen, the all-black unit out of Tuskegee, Ala. He later was assigned to the 301st Fighter Group. He also was involved in the design of the telemetry and navigation systems of the Apollo space missions. He retired as a master sergeant. Tom was born in Philadelphia to Thomas R. Pitts and the former Mary Bright. He was raised in North Philadelphia and attended Northeast High School. He worked in the postal service before joining the Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; a son, Erik; a daughter, Daughan, and three grandchildren
