28th Combat Support Hospital, Kirk US Army Health Clinic, out of Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD


She was returning to her barracks in Baghdad, Iraq, after physi­cal training when she was killed by shrapnel from a mortar attack. She had been serving in Iraq since September, was caring for wounded Iraqis at a hospital inside the fortified district that also hosts the US Embassy and Iraq's parliament. She had been assigned to Kirk US Army Health Clinic at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, where she was chief nurse of general medicine. She was the first Army nurse killed in Iraq since the 2003 US invasion, and the first female Army nurse killed in combat since the Vietnam war. Among her military awards and decoration were the Bronze Star Medal; Purple Heart; National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Combat Medical Badge; and Army Service Ribbon.
