Sallie Reay Pearl Crain was the daughter of Jefferson Jones Gaines and Emily Jane Pendleton Gaines, of Gainesville, Georgia. She was a beautiful southern belle.
Sallie came from a well-known old southern family from Georgia and Virginia.
She met Jeff Crain at Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia while on the Young Harris Debate Society. This was considered the highest social order of the time.
She married Jefferson Rado Crain on December 26, 1895 in Gainesville, Hall County, Georgia.
Their children were Cecil Jones Crain, Thelma Gertrude Crain and Eula Merle Crain.
Sallie was my great-grandmother. Her daughter Merle was my grandmother. Grandma was only four when her mother died, and spoke of her often, and never really got over her death. Grandma said she had lovely auburn hair and sang in the church choir. When my grandma and I would look at her old photo albums, and we came across pictures of Sallie, my grandma would refer to her as "and this is my mother, Sallie Gaines Crain". She would say her full name.
During an interview, my great aunt told me that Sallie's family did not want Sallie, Jeff and their two children to move "west."
In reading many newspaper articles from Olustee, Oklahoma, Sallie was a member of the Baptist Ladies Aid and Missionary Society, president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, President of the Oklahoma New State Society, and a Sunday School teacher. There are many, many newspaper tributes and obituaries, as her death at a young age was a shock to their community.
She died of peritonitis, from an appendectomy operation while living in Olustee, OK. She was a devout Christian and a member of the Baptist Church in Olustee, Oklahoma.

Died - At her home in this city on Sunday Evening, March 1, Mrs. Sallie Ray Crain, aged thirty-two years.
The sudden death Sunday evening of Mrs. Sallie Ray (Reay) Crain, was a severe shock to the citizens of Olustee. Many were the damp eyes and sorrowful hearts when the word was passed around that this noble body had lost the hard fought battle that she had made for her life.
Mrs. Crain was sick only a few days taking to her bed on Friday and rapidly growing worse until at 7:15 Sunday evening when she passed across the dark river.
She died of peritonitis, for which she was operated upon, but all the medical skill brought to bear could not save her life. She suffered much and died surrounded by her husband, physician and sorrowing friends.
Mrs. Crain was thirty-two years old at the time of her death, was a devout Christian, a loyal church member and an active club and social worker. She was held in high esteem by all her neighbors and friends.
She leaves a husband and three children to mourn her untimely demise.
The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church, of which she was a member, Monday afternoon and the body was laid to rest in the Willowvale (Olustee) Cemetery, followed by a large concourse of sorrowing friends.
And thus ends this earthly life of one of is most respected and honorable women, loving mother and devoted wife.
