Herbert C. Bennett was born on December 12, 1928, in Arlington, SD, the son of Michael A. and Lillian R. (Thomas) Bennett.

Herbert received his education in the Arlington schools. From 1946 until 1951, he worked for his brother Hugh. He was united in marriage to Anna Illies on August 4, 1952, in Arlington. After living in Arlington for several years they moved to a farm outside of town where they raised their children. In 1987, they moved into Brookings, and Herbert was employed at Ag-First until 1996. Anna died on November 3, 2010 in Sioux Falls, SD.

He enjoyed wood working, and especially loved to mow. He spent many hours mowing for others on his grasshopper mower.

Herbert is survived by his children Patricia Asmus of Brookings, SD, Peggy (James) Egeberg of Arlington, SD, James (Emily) Bennett of Brookings, SD, Paula Bennett (William Kennedy) Gauger of Brookings, SD, Jeff Bennett and his special friend Sonja Beier of Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; two sisters, Maxine Christensen of Watertown, SD and Blanche Mansoor of Santa Rosa, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant brother, Paul, one sister, Lorraine Alexander and brothers, Hugh and Lyle Bennett.
