Sudden Death of Miss Avy Short. Occurred Monday Night In Butte Hospital
Miss Avy Short, until the first of the year superintendent of Blaine county schools, died very unexpectedly at the Murray hospital in Butte Monday night last.
Anaconda Standard: Miss Avy Short, one of the best known teachers in Butte, and well known throughout the state as an educator, died last night at Murray hospital after a brief illness from acute throat trouble. Miss Short had a host of friends in Butte and throughout the state and was especially well known among teachers and educators generally. During the past few years she was superintendent of schools of Blaine county, concluding her term at the close of school last year. About 10 days ago she came to Butte to visit friends and was a guest at several social affairs given by her friend, Mrs. E.B. Weirick, and others. She first complained of feeling ill last Sunday, but neither she nor her friends thought her ailment was at all serious. She was stopping with Miss Alice Dinsmore in the Napton. Yesterday she was feeling worse and a physician was called in. He advised her removal to the hospital where she could receive proper attention and she was taken to Murray's shortly after 7 o'clock last evening. An hour later telephone messages informed many friends that Miss Short was in serious condition and before any of them could reach the hospital, she was dead, having passed away about 9 o'clock. Telegrams have been sent to relatives in other parts of the country and until they are heard from, no arrangements can be made for burial. A sister of Miss Short, Mrs. Lucas, is buried in Butte, but her parents are buried in Iowa and it is probable she will be shipped to that place.
Miss Short was born in Winterset, Iowa, about 40 years ago. Seventeen years or more ago she came to Montana with her sister, Madge, locating in Philipsburg, where Miss Avy taught school and where Madge was married to Jack Lucas, a mining man. Later Miss Short came to Butte and taught in the schools there. During her residence in Butte she was prominent as an educator and popular socially. A few years ago she took up a homestead near Dodson, Mont., and took up her residence there, her election to the office of county superintendent of Blaine county following. When her term expired she was offered a place in Butte schools again and would have accepted.
Among the surviving relatives of Miss Short are a sister, Mrs. Trumbull White of New York, wife of the editor of Everybody's and associate editor of Outing; a sister, Mrs. B.F Yates of Minneapolis, and a brother, Hugh, in Medora, N.D.
