Maurice E. Bailey, 81, formerly of Orchard Park, a chemist and educator, died Saturday (June 21, 1997) after a brief illness at his home in Pikeville, Ky.

Bailey received his doctorate from Purdue University in 1941. From then until 1970, he was director of research at Allied Chemical Corp. in Buffalo and was a leader in the development of the polyurethane industry.

During World War II, Bailey did munitions-related research for the National Analine Division of Allied Chemical.

When President John F. Kennedy was in the White House, Bailey was responsible for developing a polyurethane floor for the kitchen. His name is on 12 patents.

From 1970 to 1987, he was a chemistry professor, chairman of the Science Division and director of mining programs at Pikeville College in Kentucky. During that time, he developed a new safety-oriented mining technology curriculum.

He also was director of coal development in the State of Kentucky Energy Department. Most recently, he did private consulting in the area of waste control.

Throughout his career, Bailey interpreted scientific and technical information for other scientists, students and the general public. With 60 years of experience, he wrote numerous articles and essays. In 1984, he wrote "Coal and Other Rocks: A Geology of Coal Measures," a textbook for the coal industry.

He was a member of the American Chemical Society for 50 years and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was an elder in both the Orchard Park and Pikeville Presbyterian churches and an honorary alumnus of Pikeville College.

He was the widower of Doris A. and Mary E.

Surviving are his wife, the Georgia Muncy Bailey of Pikeville; three sons, James C. of Amherst, F. Stephen of Tully and Christopher M. of Mentor, Ohio; a daughter, Susan L. Levi of Clarence; two stepsons, Bruce Hopkins of Elkhorn City, Ky., and Charles Luke Hopkins of Pikeville; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held in Pikeville. Burial will be in Wheelersburg, Ohio.
