Mr. Atkins was an Army veteran and worked for Malloy Brothers in Freeport.
He was a member of Alston Chapel United Church of Christ where he taught Sunday school.
Mr. Atkins is survived by Edith Massie of Hempstead; a daughter, Sherryl Bacon of Douglasville, Ga.; and a sister, Cora Atkins of Fayetteville, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Alston Chapel United Church of Christ near Carthage.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by Fry-Prickett Funeral Home of Carthage.
