The son of the Rev. Alfred Andes and Minnie Bowman Andes of Harrisonburg, VA, Mark treasured his family, the people of the churches he served, and the Shenandoah Valley. He also delighted considerably in Duke and UVA athletics.
Mark was influenced deeply early in life by his parents, his grandmother Barbara Wenger Andes, siblings Bill, Roy, Raymond, and Clarene, and later, their spouses, and Antioch Christian Church. Educated at Bridgewater College, Elon College, and Duke Divinity School, he served United Church of Christ and Congregational Christian churches in VA and NC, including Berea Christian Church in Ossipee and Edgewood UCC in Burlington, and was pastor emeritus of First Christian UCC in Burlington. Joining him in this work from 1947 onward, including organizing a new church start in South Boston, VA, was his wife, Catherine Cooper Andes.
Deeply grateful for his life and Christian witness, his surviving family includes his wife of 72 years, Kathy; daughter Cindy Nance, son-in-law Richard Nance, and grandchildren Scott and Patrick Nance; daughter Kristin Andes, son-in-law Tom Magraw, and grandchildren Joseph and Hannah Magraw; his nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at First Christian UCC, 415 S. Church St., Burlington, followed by the funeral at 2 p.m.
