While serving in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant j.g. Ensign Brown was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions on December 27, 1941 in Sulu Philippines. Rescued by natives of Sulu he was able to eventually get to Australia after being listed as Missing in Action for six months. He graduated from the U.S. Navy War College
