Born in Hesse-Castle, the son of John & Mary Apple. In 1860, he was a laborer living in Southampton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. In 1881, he lived in Baltimore and worked for the gas company. He stood 5' 4" tall and had lighe hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York January 8, 1864, with Co. B, 187th Pa Inf, serving at the rank of private until honorably discharged August 3, 1865.
