Allen Carl Younger was born Andrew William Allen. At some point in the late 1920s, he (and at least two of his brothers) left Illinois headed for California. They were inspired by tales of Jesse James and changed their names to those of members of the gang. After some amount of struggle, they finally made it to Colorado. The others gave up and went home, but Andrew, who had chosen the name of Al Younger, decided to stay. He can be found in Colorado in the 1930 census, living in a rooming house and working as a miner. Perhaps because it was more trouble that it was worth to change back, he lived the rest of his life as Al Younger. This story was told to me by my father, the son of Oliver Allen, one of the brothers who went as far as Colorado. My Dad knew his 'Uncle Al' and 'Aunt Hazel,' who traveled back to visit in Missouri. I have complete confidence in the story as told.
