COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Mattie Clementine Derrick was born on July 9, 1913, in Lake Arthur, to Thelma America (Walker) and Robert Thomas Derrick. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized as a teenager in Hagerman in an irrigation channel. Mattie went home with her Lord Jesus Christ in College Station, Texas, on Thursday, July 12, 2007.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at Hermosa Drive Church of Christ with Jimmy Derrick and Bob Mayberry officiating and graveside services will follow at Hagerman Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Terpening & Sons Funeral Home in Artesia. Memorial services in College Station will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, at A&M Church of Christ.

Mattie attended Lake Arthur High School where she excelled in basketball. She married Roy Hammons Nov. 23, 1931, in Roswell. Later in life she married Clyde Rasor on April 18, 1974. Mattie had a long career as a business woman in retail selling milk, dresses, makeup and silverware door-to-door. She is best known in Artesia for her furniture store, eventually specializing in baby furniture and accessories.

Most importantly, Mattie loved, fed and nurtured all of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. All family was always of great importance in her life.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Louise Hammons, of Bryan, Texas; a daughter, Gwen Sweatt, of Belton, Texas; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Sandra and Bill Trainor, of College Station; granddaughter, Beverly Sweatt, of Artesia; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Tom and Lorrie Hammons of Carrolton, Texas, and Paul and Laura Hammons of Bryan, Texas; great-grandchildren: Sandi (Trainor) Moore, Chelsea Trainor, Billy Trainor, Scott Hammons, Julie Hammons and Alan Hammons; great-great-grandchildren: Trace and Brayden Moore; and one special friend and namesake, Mattie McCombs of Artesia. Mattie is preceded in death by her husbands, Roy Hammons and Clyde Rasor; her brothers, Millard, Curly, Slick, Sam and Buddy Derrick; her sister, Laura Heath; and her parents, Tom and Maggie Derrick.

Pallbearers will be Tom Hammons, Paul Hammons, Bill Trainor, Billy Trainor, Louis Derrick and Steve Thompson. Honorary pallbearers include Scott Hammons, Billy Merritt, Bill Sweatt and all her nephews. She will be greatly missed.
