He served in the United States Navy in the Mediterranean during World War II as an aerial gunner. He studied at Black Mountain College, then moved to New York and worked as a film critic for the Communist Party USA newspaper, The Daily Worker. He published his first book, A Wake in Ybor City, in 1963 which led him to retire from a 10 year career at a pharmaceutical company. He published fifteen books and wrote articles for The New Yorker, Esquire, The New York Times Magazine and other periodicals from 1963 until 1995.
