I am looking for the parents and birthdate and place for James Newton BOUTWELL, b. NY ca. 1826; d. Hazard, WA 19 Jan 1895; m. Washtenaw County, MI 19 May 1851 Catherine Elizabeth TYLER: b. "Tyler Hollow," Marcellus, NY ca. 1827. The earliest record I have for James is the 1850 census at Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, MI (p. 200, family #356) in a household headed by his future wife's parents, Dr. David and Hannah (BURTESS) TYLER. He and his family are in the 1860 census at Urbana, Champaign County, IL (p. 438, family #1088); the family includes Hannah TYLER, age 63. In 1870, he was at Worth, Cook County, IL (p. 634, family #30), living next to W. B. BOUTWELL and his family. William Bassett BOUTWELL derives from the Lyndeborough, NH branch of the Boutwells, but no connection to a James Newton BOUTWELL has been found in that family. In the 1880 census he and his family are listed twice: once, as James N. BOUTWELL, at Hyde Park, Cook County, IL (ED 193, family #149); and again as Newton BOUTWELL, at Lake, Cook County, IL (ED 197, family #280). James N. BOUTWELL served in the Civil War in Renwick's Elgin Battery of Light Artillery, with the rank of Second Lieutenant at the time of his discharge. He received a pension [file IC750720]. His service file contains some of his letters, revealing that he wrote very clearly and in an excellent style. Various listings in Chicago city directories from 1869 to 1887 list him as a real estate agent. On 15 Jan 1892 he was 65 years old, and resided at South Evanston, Cook County, IL. Hazard, WA, where he is reported in his pension papers as having died, is in Spokane County, 4.5 miles southwest of Deer Park. He and his family are mentioned in the 1912 TYLER Genealogy, Vol. II, p. 629, where it is said that his wife died in Morgan Park, IL. He is called Newton BOUTWELL in this genealogy, which says that he died in Chicago, contrary to the information in his pension file. The TYLER Genealogy lists five children for him: Emma, who died about 1895 and m. in Morgan Park, IL Charles Kopf; Catherine, who m. Frank Newell and resided near Rosebud, OR with four children; Clara, also residing near Rosebud, OR; and two others who d. young. Can anyone add more to this record?

From Marriages in the New York Reformer [Watertown, NY], 1850-1861, by Richard W. Hungerford, Jr.:
5 Jun 1851
In the city of Ann Arbor, Michigan, on 19 May 1851, Mr. J. N. BOUTWELL, formerly of Watertown, and Miss Catherine E., the youngest daughter of Capt. D. TYLER, of the former place.
Listed in 1840 among the students of the Black River Literary and Religious Institute [later the Jefferson County Institute]: Amanda, Emily, and James N. BOUTWELL of Watertown.
The only known BOUTWELL family in Watertown during this period is that of Harvey and Hannah BOUTWELL, who had daughters Amanda and Emily. It would appear, then, that James Newton BOUTWELL is their son. This would make him a second cousin of William Bassett BOUTWELL, his neighbor in the 1870 census.
