The community of Bayard was saddened Thursday morning, July 11, by the news that the long and useful life of one of Its pioneer residents, E. H. Lockwood, had come to a close during the night.

Although living In advanced years, having been 85 last November, Mrs. Lockwood has enjoyed comparative good health, taking part in her church activities and attending Woman's club and Bayard Chapter of the Eastern Star.

During her illness, which was of eight weeks duration, she accepted her suffering and pain with the same patience and fortitude she had exhibited all during her life. Her mind and memory were unusually active and her interest in community affairs so lively, she was admired by all who knew her.

Ceralda Mershon, daughter of C. H. and Leah Mershon, was born at Newton, Iowa, on November 14, 1854. When a child of six years she moved with her parents and family to Fairview, Iowa.
Here she, when twelve years of united with the Church of Christ to which she remained faithful and loyal to the time of her death.

On June 14, 1875, she became the of Dr. Edward Hanson Lockwood. They established their home at Mechanicsville, Iowa, where they for several years. More than fifty years ago, when Bayard was a young and struggling town, Dr. and Mrs. Lockwood came to this community which they both served so faithfully. Mrs. Lockwood, being the wife of the typical country doctor and reared a family of six sons and daughters, knew the rigors of pioneer life and hard times but she met all conditions with the calm and serene spirit which has typified her through the years.

Her daughter Vira passed away in 1910 and her husband preceded her in death in 1925. Her five living children all of whom have been administering to her during her last illness, were present at the service. They are Dr. Hendrix Lockwood of S.D., Mrs. Leah Strasser and Lusk D. Lockwood of Bayard, Mrs. Zetta Gordon of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ivyl Lockwood of Minneapolis, Kans. She also leaves a brother, Arthur Mershon of Fairhope, Alabama and a sister-in-law Mrs. F. W. Hill of Pasadena, Calif.

These together with 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and a host of friends, will hold dear the memory of Grandma Lockwood as she was lovingly called by many who knew her.
Her life was an example of the type of Christian womanhood our nation has always needed and leaves us legacy which will be enhanced by the passing years.

Another good and faithful servant has gone to claim her reward.

Funeral services were held in the Church of Christ on Saturday afternoon for Mrs. E. H. Lockwood in charge of Rev. E. H. Jackson assisted by Rev. Glen Meloy. Interment was in Highland cemetery.

Out of town relatives in attendance at the service not mentioned in the above were Mrs. Hendrlx Lockwood of Henry, S. D., Mr. and Mrs. Nerl Mershon and Mrs. Roy Houser and daughter of Marshalltown.
