Spc. Benjamin B. Bartlett Jr. of Manchester, Georgia grew up in Woodland where he and his family were members of the Woodland Baptist Church. In 2000 he graduated from Flint River Academy and was a member of regional championship golf and football teams, the debate and science bowl teams, and a number of service organizations. Trey was a happy student who always wore a smile. After graduation, he attended Auburn University and worked in construction prior to entering the United States Army in November 2005. Trey had a special love for his family, particularly for his grandfather, Blake Bartlett, with whom he shared a close bond. His mother died at an early age as well as his sister, Lura and his father died in April 2007. Also his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Irad Lee of Madisonville, Tennessee; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Blake Bartlett of Woodland. In the Army he found a place that he called home along with pride for his country. Trey was a fire-support specialist, who joined the Army in Atlanta on Nov. 22, 2005. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, and was promoted to specialist. His other awards and decorations are the National Defense Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terror Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon during his time of service. He will be honored posthumously with the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Combat and Action Badge, and his Weapons Expert Badge. He died in Mosul, Iraq, of wounds suffered from a rocket propelled grenade at age 25.
