JOAN'S OBITUARY

Joan Patricia Philipp, 83, wife of Rev. Earl D. Philipp, “fell asleep in Jesus” on Tues., Nov. 19, 2019, at Integris Baptist Hospital, Oklahoma City, OK. God gave her life on June 3, 1936, at Deaconess Hospital, Evansville, IN. and “new life in Christ” in Joan the Rite of Holy Baptism in Redeemer Lutheran Church, Evansville, IN. At twenty-one years of age, she was a secretary for the Chrysler Corporation in Evansville, which eventually closed two plants in Evansville. She was the first woman transferred to their yet-to-be-built plant in Kirkwood, MO.

Eventually, she became secretary to the business manager of Concordia Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis, MO. There she met her future husband, Earl Philipp and they were married on July 27, 1963, in Concordia Lutheran Church, Kirkwood, MO, by Pastor Armin J. Wangerin.

God blessed this union with one daughter, Adriana R. Philipp, on Feb. 4, 1967, in Paragould, AR. She suddenly and unexpectedly fell asleep in Jesus on July 18, 2017.

When the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) in convention passed woman suffrage in 1969, Joan became the first female delegate to represent her church at the convention of the Missouri District. She loved teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, leading the church choir, founding and leading “The Joyful Sound” youth choir of Trinity Lutheran, El Reno, and playing the piano, autoharp, and the church organs at various parishes where her husband served as pastor.

She was privileged to possess a two-manual Allen organ in her home where she spent hours practicing for various worship services for church. She loved the organ and skillfully and lovingly produced music from it that was undoubtedly spirited directed and spirit inspired.

She thoroughly enjoyed watching humorous movies, reading as a pastime, knitting, and having sweet cats and dogs as pets in her life over the years.

She loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her family, and her numerous loyal friends. She has requested no funeral service and that the committal service be privately held at Sunset Memorial Gardens Park Cemetery, Evansville, IN. Memorial gifts may be designated for to your favorite charity or institution, or to Christ Lutheran Church, 501 N. Clear Springs Rd., Mustang, OK 73064 (Building Fund).
