SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - "A Sandy woman possibly suffering from Dementia, spent nearly twenty-four hours lost in a ravine after she fell. By the time rescuers found her, it was too late.
She was alive when they pulled her out of the brush behind her home near 8700 South and 3200 East and they rushed her to the hospital.
She was taken to Intermountain Medical Center where her family got the horrible news.
Mari Draper had a very long fall and after spending as many as 24 hours outside in the changing temperatures The 84-year-old widow died at Intermountain Medical Center.
Her neighbors say she'll be remembered.
Draper liked to garden in her backyard, right next to a 200-yard deep ravine.
Mari's neighbor of 18 years, Sheryl Snarr, said Mari was gardening over the weekend and thinks she probably just slipped and fell.
By Tuesday afternoon when no one had seen her for over 24 hours, neighbors got concerned.
Authorities were called and later found Draper several hundred feet down a hill.
Rescuers say Draper had very severe injuries and was very hypothermic when they reached her.
Draper had fallen so far and the hill was so steep that the rescue crews had to repel down to her.
She was alive, but in very critical condition.
Snarr described Draper as a giving, sweet, kind, and generous person.
The entire neighborhood, it seems, loved her and they're having a tough time coming to terms with the way she died.
When Mari Draper's husband died several years ago, the entire neighborhood took her under their wing.
Authorities say there is no way to know for sure how long she was outside. it could have been more than 24 hours.
Mari Draper has two daughters and several grandchildren".
She was born July 3, 1923 in Layton, Utah to John Phillip and Alice Marie Partenheimer. Mari married Murray Draper, a decorated military officer, in Salt Lake City. She worked as a dental assistant, columnist for Naval activities and for Browning Arms during the war effort. Mari was a professional and church vocalist, performing in many local productions. She loved "reconstructing" interiors of homes with each military move. She gave memorable military gala affairs. Mari raised three great daughters. She is and always will be as vibrant as the "coral" color lipstick she wore!
Survived by her daughters, Pearlene (Lorin) Sperry; Denise Nelms; Murayna Gilbert; five grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband and parents.
A Memorial Service will be held at 7:30 PM on Friday, April 18, 2008 at Goff Mortuary located at 8090 South State Street in Midvale, Utah. Friends may call from 6:00-7:30 PM prior to the Services.
