He was born Sven Erik Leonart Karlsson in Umea, Sweden, on September 24, 1927, to Sven Karlsson and Teckla Astrid Jonsson Karlsson. He came to the United States aboard the Gripsholm on New Year's Day, 1930, and lived in the Reno area most of his life. He attended Babcock Kindergarten,Orvis Ring and Yerington Elementary Schools, and Northside Junior High School, graduating from Reno High School in 1945 and the University of Nevada-Reno in 1949 where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Upon graduation, he entered the Army and served as an Artillery Instructor during the Korean War. After discharge, he entered law school at Washington College of Law, American University, Washington, D.C., receiving his Bachelor of Law on June 8, 1958. He was admitted to the Nevada State Bar on November 5, 1958 and the Nevada Supreme Court, and, subsequently, served as a Deputy District Attorney in Washoe County from 1959-1961 under District Attorney William Raggio, later establishing his private law practice, until retiring in 2005. Eric was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 51 years Ann E. (East) Richards, his half-sister Beverly Stewart and his half-brother, William "Bill" Richards. He is survived by his five children Kathy (John) Cercek, Eric L. Richards, Jr., Mary (Mark) Games, Bruce Richards and Adrienne (Dean) Knoles; his 12 grandchildren John-Eric Cercek, Jeff Cercek, Nick Cercek, Jake Richards, Jordan Games, Evyn Games, Willow Games, Callie Richards, Morgan Richards, Mathew Richards, Elena Richards, and Korey Knoles; and, numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, July 13, 2007, at 2 p.m., at Walton's Funeral Home on 2nd Street, in Reno, with a celebration of his life to follow immediately after the service, at the 19th Hole at Lakeridge Golf Course. The family will have a private inurnment at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery. The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful staff at Carrow's Restaurant on Wells Avenue, where Dad thoroughly enjoyed their kindness and their friendly and caring conversation (and, most of his meals!) during the last months of his life. We also wish to thank the wonderful physician and nursing staffs on the Telemetry Unit at Saint Mary's Hospital and at Tahoe Pacific Hospital on Double R Boulevard, where he spent his last days. Their special attention and compassion were a great comfort during a very difficult time.
